Generic to Copaxone Launched

June 18, 2015 - Sandoz and Momenta announced the launch of Glatopa™, an A-rated generic to Teva’s Copaxone® (glatiramer acetate 20mg/mL). Glatopa is available in a single-dose prefilled syringe with a white plunger.

Copaxone is approved for the treatment of patients with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). This formulation is administered as a once-daily subcutaneous (SC) injection. Glatopa is currently the only FDA-approved generic to Copaxone, but it was not awarded exclusivity. According to IMS Health, annual U.S. sales of Glatopa were $2.4 billion in 2014.

Adverse reactions or quality problems experienced with the use of a recalled product may be reported to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting Program either online, by regular mail or by fax.

Actual drug patent expiration dates and a availability of new medications are subject to change due to patent litigation, settlement agreements, additional patents, exclusivities, and final FDA approval.  Distribution and availability of new medications at pharmacies may not occur immediately following FDA approval.  Patients are advised to speak with their healthcare professional or pharmacist regarding appropriateness as well as actual availability.
