Altreno Approved to Treat Acne
August 24, 2018 – The U.S. FDA has approved Altreno™ (tretinoin 0.05%) lotion, manufactured by Ortho Dermatologics, as a topical treatment for acne vulgaris for patients who are at least nine years of age. It is the first FDA-approved lotion formulation of the active ingredient, tretinoin.
Patients in clinical trials generally tolerated Altreno well. The product contains a retinoid (tretinoin), which is often associated with skin dryness and irritation. To combat these side effects, Altreno’s formula includes hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and collagen. Patients who received Altreno in a clinical trial saw improvement in their acne symptoms, and the majority reported satisfaction with the treatment regimen. Recommended dosing is a thin layer of Altreno applied to affected areas of the skin once daily.
Ortho Dermatologics is expected to launch the product during the fourth quarter of 2018. Pricing plans have not yet been announced.
